Poetry Breakout

Teachers are always searching for engaging ways to review reading skills.  A poetry breakout is the perfect way to review poetry skills in your third, fourth, or fifth grade classroom.

Any type of breakout is easy to put together. Although, if you are searching for a poetry breakout that is ready to print and go, just put your name below.  I’ll send you the Poetry Breakout I created ASAP:

Creating a Poetry Breakout

Creating a breakout is easier than it seems!  Anyone can do it.

To begin, you will need to find poems and questions.  A few places to find free poems:  STAAR released tests, Readworks.org, or Poets.org (although you would have to create the questions on this one).

Once you have printed enough copies for each group, you can cut apart the questions and put them each in an envelope.

As students work through each question and get the right, they get a new envelope with the next question.

Answers can be put in a self checking Google Form or be shown to the teacher for permission to move on.

Additionally, I give a one minute time out to groups who ALL members are NOT participating.

Breakout Advantages

There are many advantages for students participating in a breakout activity.

First of all, students must work as a team to complete the breakout.  Working together is a lifelong skill.  Students who are competitive will want to be the first team done.  An incentive for the winner or any team who completes the breakout successfully is an extra bonus that students will love.

Next, the Poetry Breakout will give students the opportunity to hear other student’s thoughts while answering the questions.

The teacher must decide on how to group the students.  You could choose to group students by academic level or mixed grouping.

Either way students will learn from each other.

Finally, students prepare for standardized test questions in an engaging way with a hands on activity.

On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade STAAR Reading Test a poem is always included. Changes will be made to the 2022 STAAR test. Read more about those changes here: Understanding the New 2022 STAAR Reading Test

Finding new and different ways to practice poetry questions is the key to learning.

Poetry can be a difficult topic for upper elementary students.  Using engaging ways to practice poetry such as a breakout will help students expand their knowledge on poetry.
