To do Online or In Class
Mother’s Day will be here before we know it. It’s important to help our students create something special for their mothers. Especially this year, 2020 has been a bit crazy. Mom’s really deserve a special gift from their kids. Here are 7 easy Mother’s Day activities that can be done in class or online.
1. Cinquain
A cinquain is a 5 line poem. I give my students the following outline to fill in the rough draft of their poem:
First line — Name you call your mom
Second line– Two adjectives describing her
Third line– Three ing words that describe her
Fourth line– A phrase that describes your mom
Fifth line– Another name you call your mom
Once the students have completed their rough draft, they can create a final copy. I like to have them type out the final copy on a Google Slide or PowerPoint. They change the background to an image that reminds them of their mom. They could also write the poem on a blank sheet of paper and then color the background lightly.
2. Top 10 Reasons
Students will create a top 10 list on reasons they love their mom (who remembers David Letterman?). I always set up the Google Doc ahead of time with the title, the numbers, and the sentence starter: I love my mom because
There are a few guidelines that I lay out for my students before they start: be specific (think of special things that your mom does for you), start with number 10, and a top ten list starts with the least important reason and ends with the most important reason. For example, 10. I love my mom because she makes me pancakes on Sunday morning. The list gets progressively more important and you could end with 1. I love my mom because she will love me no matter what.
3. Sweetest Memory
Students will write a personal narrative story about the sweetest memory they have had with their mom. Students should write about small moment in which they can describe in detail. The longer the better. Moms will be able reminisce with their children as they read the sweet memory.
4. Acrostic Poem
Who doesn’t love a good acrostic poem with the word MOTHER? There are so many ways that students can create an acrostic poem on a Google Slide or PowerPoint. Students can use different fonts, colors, and backgrounds to make their poem unique. I tell my 4th graders they have to create a phrase (not just a word) on their acrostic poem.
5. Mom of the Year
Students will write an expository essay explaining why their mom deserves to win the award “Mom of the Year.” Again giving specific examples really makes this a special essay that moms will cherish forever. Additionally, students could draw a picture of their mom receiving the award.
6. Anatomy of a Mom
In this activity students will use their artistic skills to draw their mom in detail. They also draw a background in which their mom can be found. Then students either write or type out descriptions for their mom’s body parts. For example: eyes to watch me play soccer, ears to listen to me sing, and arms to hug me with.
7. Thank You Note
You can never go wrong with an old, fashioned thank you note. Students write to their mothers explaining specific examples of things that their moms do for them that they are thankful for. A special touch would be recording them reading their thank you note. They can use SeeSaw, Loom, or even IMovie to record themselves.
Putting It All Together
If you choose to do several of these Mother’s Day activities, you could put them together in a book. I like to laminate the pages and bound them with a spiral, so they will last a long time. You could also add these projects to a frame.
No matter what, these easy Mother’s Day activities will make an incredible gift that moms will adore for a lifetime.
