Ways to Practice Revise and Edit Questions

Revise and edit questions do not come naturally to your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade students. STAAR stemmed revise and edit questions can be tricky because of their wording. However, using proven ways to practice revise and edit questions will help your students become experts in no time!

Before introducing STAAR stemmed revise and edit questions, it is necessary to teach your students grammar rules.

There are Pros to Using a Writing Notebook.  One is that students can reference grammar rules in their writing notebook while completing revise and edit questions.

Direct Teach

It is likely your students haven’t seen revise and edit questions before.  Therefore, it’s imperative to teach the difference between an editing question and a revising question.  And strategies that work for each type of question.  Plus, students need  to know how to  use grammar rules to answer the question correctly.

Ready to use lessons can be found in my resource: Digital Revise/Edit Lesson.

Teachers present the slideshow lesson while students follow along with their guided notes.  Then students can practice what they learned on the independent practice page.

Hands-on Strategies

An excellent way to introduce revise and edit question stems is by giving students a hands-on group activity.  This gives them the opportunity to practice the strategy and discuss it with their group.

Teaching Revise/Edit Strategies breaks down the different revise and edit question stems, so students understand what is being asked.  Also, they understand what strategy they need to do on each type of question.

First, students read the engaging passages.  Then students physically plug in answer choices.   Additionally, step-by-step strategies are given for each question stem.

Holiday Fun

Are you always searching for fun ways to keep your students busy right before a holiday?

I am!

Now, I always use a Holiday Revise/Edit passage.

Students work together with a partner to read a holiday themed passage and answer revise and edit questions.

Then students can self-check their answers with the QR code.

These are perfect to hang around the room or put in a literacy station.

Incorporate Social Studies

What better way to practice revise and edit questions than incorporating another subject?

STAAR Reading & Revise/Edit Passages have it all.  These passages are aligned to the Reading and Social Studies TEKS.

Third grade students read about important Community Builders.  Fourth graders read about Famous Texans.  And fifth graders read about Famous Americans.

After reading about important historical figures, students answer reading and revise/edit questions.

These passages can easily be taken for a grade in ELA or social studies class.
