As the STAAR Reading test approaches, providing your students with the best resources to succeed is important. To make your job a bit easier, here’s a list of fantastic free STAAR reading resources that can help your students not only prepare for the STAAR Reading test but also excel in reading.
STAAR Reading Question Stems
I needed a way to incorporate STAAR Reading questions in my daily lessons. I was looking for a list to easily access and know that my students were getting high-quality questions.
Now, these reading question stems have become a staple in my daily lessons.
They work well with read-aloud, guided reading, and independent reading. I can insert questions based on the genre that we are reading.
Additionally, students can use the task card version to ask each other questions or answer questions independently in their reading notebooks.
STAAR Released Test Questions
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) provides released test questions from previous years.
These questions are a goldmine for understanding the format and types of questions that may appear on the test. Access them at TEA’s website.
ReadWorks
ReadWorks offers a huge amount of reading passages and comprehension questions.
You can filter resources by grade level and skill, making tailoring your lessons to your students’ needs easy. Visit ReadWorks to explore the passages.
Reading Challenges
Having students compete in reading breakouts is an engaging way for them to review a variety of reading skills.
I have created 2 FREE challenges for STAAR Reading Prep.
Poetry Breakout
This challenge includes 4 poems. Each has 4 STAAR stemmed reading questions. Then students can self-check using the Google form.

They can complete the challenge in groups or independently.
It is DIGITAL or PRINTABLE, so it works well in any classroom.
